Vertical or horizontal? Skinny or wide? Dramatic or coordinating?

Stripes are often overlooked and underused as a design element. They can coordinate or add a dramatic splash to a garment. They provide an easy way to play with color and add interest to your knitting at the same time. Stripes are a fabulous way to use leftover yarn, and they also offer an opportunity for you to incorporate colors you may not normally use into your knitting.

Play with colored pencils and scraps of paper to create stripe swatches and discuss what constitutes a stripe. See how foregrounds and backgrounds can change your stripes and discover how medieval Italian mathematics can create an internal sense of rhythm resulting in visually pleasing stripes. Utilizing these strategies can go a long way toward making your scrap yarn projects look elegant!

During the hands-on knitting portion of the day you will learn to carry colors not in use along the side of your knitting instead of cutting the yarn and re-attaching it. This will help you avoid the "too many ends" syndrome but, for the few ends you do have, we will practice weaving them in as you go, making finishing a breeze. Finally, you will learn how to avoid the dreaded "jog" when you are knitting stripes in the round. In addition, you can turn this final circular swatch into a cute little baby hat.

With stripes, adding color and texture to your knitting is easier than ever!
